somerville club history

The Somerville Club was founded in 1893 as the Horfield Liberal Club at 23 Sommerville Road, previously the location of the Reverend and Mrs Sanders’ Establishment for Young Ladies. By 1923 the name had changed to the North Bristol Liberal Club and subsequently to the non-politically aligned Somerville Club. (It appears that the road name was spelt both with single and double M’s and when the club was named a single M was in vogue). No 21 was acquired and the club extended over the original gardens of both houses to form the property as it is today. The Somerville Club continues to evolve in the services it provides to the local community and hopefully will continue to do so for another 130 years!
